I absolutely adore these attempts at prophecy. Bottom line: We have no idea what the thing will cost, and all we can do right now is make educated guesses.
Hence the name of this site: Mac Rumors.
I'll give you that not all the rumors or speculations here are "educated," but if I were to make a price bracket sheet I'd put $29 losing out in the first round and $129 in the Final Four.

Now I know what is the product Steve is going to announce!
An air conditioner!
The Apple Whoosh
It has amazing new features:
Compact size. With it's ultra portable size you could transport it were you go, even if it weights the same as your refrigerator. It's that thin. And that heavy, too.
Touchscreen. Because there is nothing worse that an air conditioner remote. Imagine a beautiful touch interface. Pinch once to put it in "comfort" with a smooth nice wind in your head, pinch twice to go "caribean" and holograms of caribean hot girls make the appearance around you. It uses sensors to detect were you are and place the holographic girls right there.
.Mac Syncing. What happens when you go to a conference or a hotel and you want to relax like when you're at home but you don't have your Apple Woosh with you? Well, using .Mac syncing, all your Wooshes will remember your favorite settings. It's that easy. It's just work. Another reason to switch to Mac, even tough will work on Windows too, but the iTunes version will be crippled.
Flash drive. What you say? Nobody wants memory on an air conditioner? Oh, your so wrong. Steve knows we want to see pictures in the roof while the Apple Woosh use a mosaic effect to present the family photos to... well, the family. And all of this magic uses Core Animation and isn't compatible with Tiger, so make sure so upgraded to the latest big cat.
iTunes WIFI Store. Wouldn't it be great if you could purchase music right in the living room while looking at the caribean girls proyected by the Apple Woosh? Of course it would. Just watch the Steve demo at the keynote or wait for the Steve Jobs Clone demo at Apple.com, the same guy that demoed Leopard with the classical look of SJ.
Integrated iSight. Don't you wish you could take photos with your air conditioner? Or make a video chat? The Apple Woosh includes a new iSight camera that will just know when you want to broadcast your life to the world. Just bounce your head three times and the Apple Woosh will kill the lights and open iChat for you, with all your lazy friends waiting for talking to you, because we know you think your so important.
It's the ultimate reality show. You can make feeds and WooshCasts that your dummy friends will easily watch at there iPod or AppleTV. You would not need to know anything about air conditioners, let the Apple Woosh be up there for you, broadcasting your life to iTunes and, of course, making you cool. (Get it? "Cool"? Because it's a air conditioner. It makes you cool. Get it?)
The Apple Woosh will ship in "febiury" at the incredible cost of $499. But wait two months, because by then it will cost just $10.

I am professional editor. I get paid to edit. I just dont edit giant films. I think there is a little discrediting going on for what makes a professional editor.
I was in a discussion a year ago about all the new features that just got released. In the days of yesteryear, editor (film wise) would cut the film, then once they had a locked picture, they would add audio, color the film, sound effects and score.
However, a year ago during a project I found myself very angry at the way FCP was functioning given the way editors have to edit today. I have been a big FCP user for years and consider myself very experience on the software. I refer to the editing style of today, which is also being done in feature film editorial, that you are no longer just the film/video editor. YOU ARE the sound designer, the colorist, the composer, and the technician, at least at a basic level.
I feel that 10 years ago you would show a "rough" cut that was 50% done, no audio effects, color, or score, just the cuts and clients were possible able to get it. However today I feel that a rough cut needs to look more like 95% done. Many times when I show a client a piece of footage that doesnt look like an almost finished product, they get concerned on the final piece, even when you explain that is a rough cut.
So now that a lot of editor are having to show cuts that are almost done to get notes, the actual act of editing has become a nightmare to me. I have to move sounds, scores, titles, overlays, graphics all out of the way to make the simplest edit. Half the time, something gets moved that isnt supposed to. causing extra work. And I will be honest, sometimes, (which I know we all do....) I say good enough, because the actual act of moving a giant timeline around is just too painful.
well not anymore (hopefully)
I want the freedom that this FCPX with hopefully provide. It seems to be changing with how many of us are going to have to start editing.
And of course one final thought. A good editor is a good editor, it is an art. Just because someone is an "expert" on AVID, PP, FCP doesnt mean they are an good editor. Same as someone who knows how to put paint on canvas isnt necessarily Van Gogh.
I think this version will help us tell stories easier and more efficient. It is still up to the editor what he/she will do with the tool.
Nicely put.

WOW! Guys please go and read the 10-year old forums, it's amazingly fun!
There are comments like:
"I still can't believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player? I want something new! I want them to think differently!
Why oh why would they do this?! It's so wrong! It's so stupid!"
It's totally like any other new product announcement today :D
On topic: I think Apple has some amazing ideas, but also that they don't hesitate to ditch them for something new if they think it's better. I think this is the only way to evolve in today's world. Most companies stick to their traditional stuff and keep pushing it even if it's not as good as it could be, just because it was some great idea they had many years ago. Apple has absolutely no respect for tradition and will always be the first to replace one of their best inventions with something totally different. I find this admirable and dangerous at the same time, but so far it had worked great for them.
While many people will still stick to traditions, Apple won't. Rationally, the click-wheel has no real advantage over a touch screen. It's slower to navigate a menu if you have to scroll through it, rather than just press whatever you like. Yes, it is awesome and you got used to it and it looks nice, but Apple won't care for that. It's good and bad at the same time.

So this fall, we can expect from Apple...
A Retina Display iPad 3
An A5 powered iPod
and an...
A5 powered iPhone 5 with a 4" screen, 4g, better voice controls, cloud storage and drag and drop support.
Basically, every single thing on this list is about to come true...
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1021233
I could live with that. Apple is going to DOMINATE this Christmas. :)
Except for the fact that Apple is not about to release an iPad 3 this year. They have absolutely no reason to.
June: Preview Lion and iOS 5.
July/August: Release Lion.
June-Sept: Updated iMacs.
Sept: Updated iPods.
Sept/Oct(even Jan): iPhone 5.
Spring 2012: iPad 3.
You really expect them to squeeze a new iPad into the fall. If anything you will see another Air update.

...they had to bring the store down worldwide?
Sometimes I wonder what Apple hires those smart people for, if it's just the morons running their daily business.
Because those morons have to clear caches worldwide so that all the Akamai pages/sites are updated in sync.

I'm not sure about novels but I would love to be able to read articles from Time, Wired, New Yorker et cetera on my iPod. In the past I've copied them from the web and transferred them into a 'note' file for viewing on my iPod. However I'd love to be able to download them from iTunes like a podcast. 99 cents wouldn't be un-reasonable if it's a well written article and it's advertisement free.

Not so much about the data caps. There's no choice with many service providers. AT&T's data plan with the iPad for one example.
Without being too argumentative, the problem is people want a specific device and unlimited data. You can get unlimited data in a number of ways - just not necessarily with a specific device.
More to the point, I think it's just Full of Win mentioning that it's not a very ideal solution for those in Adobe's demographic. Which is a point we can discuss. I personally feel they've got it right, but I doubt there will be any substantial market for renting the full on suites when buying them outright ends up being a cheaper/more convenient option.
Actually, subscription makes sense when you consider:
a) You have the latest version at a known fixed cost
b) As a lease, rather than buy, it becomes tax deductible in full with no depreciation
c) If you only use some apps infrequently, it may be cheaper than a full suite
So it may make sense for some companies and or individuals.

As for tomorrow, I think it makes as much sense as anything at this point. Apple is facing two weeks of silence since the excitement of the pre-order is over and the release of the iPad has some time to come. It'd be a good way to stay in the news to release (or at least officially announce) updates on existing lines.
Correlating the release of the MBP with the availability of the iPad might get some people to come in for one and buy the other (higher margin on the iPad) or buy both even (Be really sweet if there was a discount for getting both). Hard to get people to buy an iPad, and then come back in a few weeks for a MBP, although how many people would really be probable customers for both I don't really know. I'll probably wind up with both eventually, but I'll wait it out for a 2nd generation iPad unless something like the Notion Ink Adam winds up being as cool in reality as it is in concept. I'm definitely in for a new MBP I think, although my personal experiences with windows 7 have been great so far (Vaio Desktop and Samsung Netbook) so if the new MBPs still have C2Ds (doubtful) or haven't figured out how to transition to a discreet GPU on the fly I might consider a high end PC at this point. Same price, and if you're not stupid about what you download and run avg the experience between 7 and OS X isn't nearly as different as when Vista was around, I wouldn't say it is better than OS X, they're different, but I like it just as well for what I need.
For now, just have to cross our fingers that tomorrow will be the day Steve Jobs makes even more money off of us all :)
Just out of curiosity, how many of you waiting for the new MBP either have ordered an iPad or are actually considering it? I'm intrigued, but solely for using it as a litigation tool, I don't really know how I see it fitting in with the MBP market but would love to know what you all think.

Safe predictions for the MB C2D:
2.16 GHz for the upper two models, 2.0 for the cheapest
~20MB larger hard drive
no difference in GPU
runs significantly cooler overall
Riskier bets:
1GB standard (but as two 512MB cards, unlike the MBP)
Price premium for black reduced to $100

Remember that you quoted and responded to my post on a discussion about the cost of UPGRADING from XP to Vista. The $399 price is not an upgrade price. Mentioning or refering to the $399 retail box edition is either ignorant or disingenuous in a discussion on UPGRADING from XP to Vista.

Feel good about yourself right? That's her choice to drive her family in, not yours. I can't stand smug people. I have no need for gas guzzler to haul kids and material around, but if I did I have the personal liberty to make that purchase. Kinda like apple products, the more choices and configurations that there are, the more ideal they become for the many different types of consumers.
Your point would be valid IF SHE HAD A FAMILY TO HAUL AROUND ANYMORE.
Both her children have their own vehicles and they no longer take long family vacations in the car anymore.
The wasting of a finite resource and pollution put out by a vehicle that large to drive 3 miles to and from the grocery store has no justification.
And yes, I do feel good about myself. I drive a vehicle that gets 95+ mpg.

Isn't it only a 30 drop - only done it so that it appears to be under a grand. Its not a significant drop - shame really, because its still so much more than the white one!
Any money off is welcome but yes it is just a cynical drop to create an apparently more attractive price point. However, they dropped the price and increase the ram and HD - if you want the colour you'll pay for it, simple as that (and apple know it)
You want it because you're weak!

Anyone knows if the mac pro allows us to upgrade to PCI graphics cards bought from retail stores? Will there be any driver issues? Do graphics card vendors include Mac drivers on their installation disc? Never seen one that does though..

I realize that some people want X, Y, Z now! For myself, I can wait for new hardwareprobably until iPhone 6 (or 5 if the next one is 4G)as I like to get several years of use out of it. Heck, I just decommissioned my iBook G4 last year. What Im excited to see is what iOS 5 will bring. This is how Apple will have dominance over Android phones.
As for waiting ~ 3 more months, while Im not a blind Apple lap dog, I have a certain amount of faith that they know what theyre doing. I think that Steve, the master of shrewd and manipulation, has taught his disciples well.

You're right, it wasn't the RIAA handing the fines, of course, it was courts. But you're wrong, there most certainly have been fines:

Those aren't fines, they're damage awards by juries. Shody reporting and misuse of the word fine.

Yeah i agree, no dedicated videocard. Its just not fesiable for the size/ price etc.
Anyhoo, I can see this update being VERY similar to the macbook pro one. Everyone was shocked with the iBook to Macbook transition, i dont think they will shock us again by suddenly adding a dedicated videocard to this lineup, or new form factor... or anything else you guys are 'hoping' for haha.
I can see a bigger HD wireless n and new processor. thats about it.
more RAM and standard DVD burner are mabyes...
haha and oh yeah, mabye a matte screen option.
As well, i agree w. some of the previous posts, no release tomorrow. Too much going on in the world haha. + i still think macbook pro's deserve some spotlight.
14th is the day.................... bets?
haha
